1979 Champion Motor Home. 360 ci, Auto, Approx. 47K original miles, Runs good, 8.6 mpg on our last trip (not going to get much better than that even in new ones). Fiberglass Roof (no leaks), Aluminum skin (all in good shape), Pull-out Futon, Front Bunk, Full Bath with shower, Kitchen, Fridge (not original), Heater, 4000W Honda EV4000 Generator (runs), Grey Water and Septic Tanks, Full water, sewer, and electric hook-up capability, good Awning, good Title, good Inspection until July 2012. Fully Winterized and kept on a trickle charge.
This motor home was purchased from a gentleman in Smethport who purchased it to park on a hill and use as a hunting camp from the original owner. I met the original owner and he also stated that the mileage was correct more or less. I purchased it and fixed it up and we ran it back and forth between here and the Niagara Falls, NY area numerous times last year and camped with it at Chautauqua Lake and Lake Ontario at Wilson, NY last year. Worked great.
Run it, park it as a seasonal, rent it out to gas guys, use it as a “guest room”, use it as a permanent Hunting/Fishing Camp, totally shred the interior and create a modern technological work of art and resell it at top dollar (this is actually being done to these older Motor Homes!), take your pick!
Reason for selling: Another gentleman we know approached us with an incredible deal on a much newer Motor Home that we couldn’t pass up. So, the old girl’s gotta go!
New Items: Completely new interior Ceiling with improvements to cabinet fastening to structure, New Wallpaper (old stuff looked like it should have been on an Anniversary Gift). New oil and Filter last year. New Spark Plugs, New front tires last July, have maybe 1000 miles on them. New Master Brake Cylinder, New front Brake pads, New U-joints (all 3 sets), New 2” Hitch Receiver.
All lighting, Heat, Propane, 110 and 12v systems work. All plumbing works with no leaks. (except water heater as noted below)
Issues: Needs a Water Heater. The original propane one apparently wasn’t drained and winterized at some point and froze, cracking the tank. Could be replaced with a small electric if propane operation isn’t an issue (just boiled water for dishes, etc, showered at CG’s). Speedometer Cable is broken (didn’t care because we used a GPS Nav system in it), Generator needs a Muffler (never needed to use it), recent winds blew off Fridge Vent Cover and broke it (covered with plastic for now), Fridge is currently not connected to the Propane system (just didn’t get around to it but fridge works fine off 12v. system), Grey water valve should be replaced. Buyer will also need to purchase an Auxiliary Battery (ies).
Side step needs some welding done to reconnect a part of it to the undercarriage. One closet door needs a new latch and the same for the under sink storage. Windshield Wiper connecting rod bushing needs replacement (had to Jerry Rig them last year to get through a trip). The wipers work but should really have the bushing replaced. It was also suggested by my mechanic that the rear end oil be changed. There were no Tables with it when purchased (used small folding tables in their stead). Rear tires are “checked” from dry rot but still safe.
Note: There was one issue that reared it’s ugly little head on only 2 occasions when we ran it last year. It just up and quit as if someone had just shut off the key. It restarted and ran fine afterwards both times. Just want folks to be aware. Still trying to hunt down the cause. May need a new ignition coil as symptoms are similar with a coil that’s on its way out. May also need a new accelerator pump. When 1st pushing the accelerator, there is a short “stall and pick-up” on occasion. All easy stuff to fix.
